Boroscope Inspections for gearboxes and main bearings

Monsson Operation offers specialized Borescope Inspections for gearboxes and main bearings, one of the key services in our portfolio, with over 1,200 inspections to date.

The gearbox is a critical component of a wind turbine, responsible for transmitting the rotational force from the rotor to the generator. Given the extreme operational conditions it endures, regular inspection and maintenance are essential to ensure its longevity and performance.

Our Gearbox Borescope Inspection provides a comprehensive evaluation of the gearbox’s internal condition. This non-invasive inspection method offers a detailed view of the condition of the gear oil and all moving parts inside the gearbox. By assessing the wear, damage, or potential issues, this inspection helps determine if the gearbox is functioning properly or if maintenance or replacement is required. This approach minimizes downtime by allowing for efficient planning of corrective actions.

Key Inspection Features:

  • Damage and Defects Detection:
    • Gear defects: wear, fatigue, corrosion, fractures, deformations, and cracks
    • Bearing defects: wear, fatigue, corrosion, fractures, deformations, cracks, and electrical discharge damage
    • Oil condition and oil leakages
  • Advanced Equipment:
    • The inspection is carried out using the Mentor Visual iQ video borescope, a cutting-edge tool known for its precision, portability, and efficiency.
  • Expert Engineers:
    • The inspection is performed by highly qualified NDT engineers with certifications in:
      • GWO (Global Wind Organization)
      • Industrial borescope usage
      • Danish Wind Power Academy gearbox maintenance and inspection
      • Winergy basic and advanced gearbox education
      • BZEE teacher training

Each inspection is documented in a Gearbox Inspection Report, which is compiled by the lead technician. This report is tailored for each gearbox inspected and follows our internal reporting template. Upon request, the report can also be customized to fit the client’s document template.

Condition monitoring through vibration analysis

Monsson Operation offers Vibration Analysis using an efficient offline portable system (SKF WindCon) equipped with 8 reading sensors or, if the wind turbine is equipped with its online Vibration Analysis system our experts can evaluate the condition and time evolution of mechanical moving parts. Our professionals have expertise in 4 different CMS brands.

So far, Monsson Operation had more than 600 CMS analysis using our offline portable system and more than 100 CMS analysis using the pre-installed online CMS

Key Inspection Features:

In terms of type of damages / defects which can be recorded, the vibration analysis can detect:

01

– Bearing damages

– Gear damages

– Imbalances

– Misalignments

– Loose parts

– Generator damages (electrical damages)

– Drive belt damages

In terms of equipment used, the vibration analysis is performed with:

02

SKF portable vibration analyzer system, equipped with 8 sensors (the system can accommodate up to 16 sensors)

In terms of method technique, the vibration analysis is performed through:
